Come Curious

The True Prerequisite for North U

Table of Contents

If I could ask North U students to do one thing before they show up to a Performance Race Week, Regatta Experience, Performance Sailing Seminar or online class, it wouldn’t be to buy our books, bring the latest gadgets, the flashiest sails, or even a head full of theory.

It would be this: come curious.

Come not to confirm what you already believe, but to challenge it. Come not to prove how much you know, but to explore how much more there is to understand.

Because at North U, the best sailors—the ones who truly grow—are the ones who stay curious.

The “Why” Matters More Than the “How”

Sailing is full of how-tos.

How to start.

How to tack.

How to trim.

How to win.

And those are important—don’t get me wrong. But the why behind those “hows” is where mastery lives.

Why does this trim work in light air?

Why do great teams make the same decision faster?

Why does that start line feel so crowded even when it’s not?

If we could all spend as much time on the why as we do on the how, we’d sail—and think—with far greater depth.

The Six Compass Points of Curiosity

Every great student brings the same toolkit to class.

Not a bag full of gear, but a mind full of questions:

Who. What. When. Where. How. Why.

Ask them all. Repeatedly.

Because each question slices another layer off the surface, revealing something more interesting beneath.

Avoiding the Two Great Pitfalls

There’s an old line about a teacher who taught his student “not to be satisfied with just getting the gist of things” and “not to fall for every smooth talker.”

In other words: he taught him to avoid the two great pitfalls of life—superficiality and grifters.

If we can avoid ego, if we can cultivate even a smidge of self-awareness, if we can try not to let our emotions blind us, we’ve already struck enormous blows against stupidity—in sailing and in life.

We can avoid being swept up in the newest fad or the oldest con.

We can stop reliving the same mistake.

We can stay curious, stay humble, and keep learning.

The North U Way

For over forty years, North U has helped sailors turn curiosity into confidence.

Our students don’t just memorize; they understand.

They don’t just follow trends; they question them.

They don’t just go faster; they know why they’re faster.

So as you prepare for your next North U course, bring your notebook, bring your sunscreen—but most of all, bring your curiosity.  Oh, and buying our books is a good idea too!

Because when curiosity sets the course, the learning never ends. Come curious and leave faster!
